West Virginia Ballers Love Booze, Public Urination

ESPN.com and the AP are reporting that chronic boozehound and
For Pepper this seems like it shouldn’t affect his status as a basketball player at WVU. And really it shouldn’t. The kid was out drinking at a bar, went to urinate, and a cop caught him out in the open somewhere. It happens and that's college. And really this wouldn’t be that big of a deal to either of them were it not for the already fairly extensive criminal history of Mazzulla. With two previous alcohol related incidents this young man should face some stiffer penalties from Bob Huggins. He has already stated he has been made aware of the situation and will handle the discipline of the players internally. But really this seems like a bigger problem with alcohol for Mazzulla. He should face some suspensions and should be mandated to seek some alcohol counseling. Lay off the sauce my friend. Seems like you could use the break. WVU needs Mazzulla to play well this season to help offset the big loss of star DeSean Butler. Although Mazzulla had a horrific turnover ratio so who knows how good he will be able to help the team even if he is on the court.
As always we’ll keep you posted to the latest in the criminal underbelly that is Big East Athletics. Despite the fact it’s football season we still keep track of the other sports too. Send your tips to the e-mail at the sidebar. Because basically we’re The Smoking Gun of Big East blogs.

Sadly for Shuster, before yesterday's match versus France in favor of alternate Chris Plys. USA subsequently won that match 4-3 by stealing a point in the 10th and final end. The reason was the bad performance of the US team in their first four games. Jason Smith, the Vice Skip, has been shooting brilliantly in the entire games and has taken to being the forth shooter and it paid off for the US against France.
The US Results so far are as follows:
Game 1: US* 5 v. Germany 7
Game 2: US* 5 v. Norway 6 (11 ends)
Game 3: US 6 v. Switzerland* 7 (11 ends)
Game 4: Denmark* 7 v. US 6 (11 ends)
Game 5: France* 3 v. US 4
And now we break down the levels of competition based on what we've seen so far into chances of making the medal rounds and talent:
Elite (Are in for the long haul. Will drink with you all night and end up at the diner stealing your bacon. Canadian bacon.)
Canada, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland
These teams are sitting pretty right now, as they are in the top four and are curling really well. Canada is on their home ice, Norway looks good, Sweden is just happy to be there, and Switzerland is indifferent. These teams are in control of their own destiny.
Game to watch for: Canada v. Great Britain Sunday Feb. 21 at 10:00pm EST.
Alright (Good for most of the night. They will drink for a while but will disappear without saying goodbye because their lady friend texted.)
Great Britain, Germany
Germany played a brilliant game against the US, and Great Britain is comprised of players from Scotland, the birthplace of the game, but have just come up short. These teams could get hot but are definitely on the bubble.
Game to watch for: Germany v. Great Britain Monday Feb. 22 at 10:00pm EST.
Not Good (Leaving early. Won't drink the shots you bought them and will sip the same beer for an hour while you plow ahead.)
China, France, Denmark, United States
The US has really had a disappointing route, losing three of their four games by simply missing routine or simple shots. China is relatively new at the sport, Denmark doesn't have cool pants and their only win was against a US team that failed to hit a final shot. France sucks at most things. These teams will really have to hope for the teams at the top to start sucking for them to even remotely have a chance.
Game to watch: The remaining US games.
Feb. 20 12:00pm EST v. Sweden
Feb. 21 5:00pm EST v. Great Britain
Feb. 22 12:00pm v. Canada
Feb. 23 10:00pm EST v. China
The ladies are not doing much better at 1-3, but they have a chance to move up more than the men do. Either way, it's exciting stuff. Enjoy the curling tweets, catch the curling fever (not an STD), and if you fancy, you too can own the lucky Norway curling pants, you can purchase them right here.

Yahoo! News is reporting via the Associated Press that the Cincy QB was severely scolded by Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Bernie Bouchard for failing to start a program on the dangers of underage drinking after he was caught using a fake ID at a bar near the Cincinnati campus. "Got it? Are we clear? You're not going to get another chance” the judge said to him. If Collaros fails to complete the program he faces 180 days in jail, which the judge seems more than willing to impose. He has until December 7th to begin the program that was assigned on October 5th.
Now I am not going to pretend like I never had a beer south of proper. However, that being said, I never tried to go to a bar before I was actually 21 either. You have to be smart if you are going to attempt breaking the law, and clearly having a fake ID is not. It’s hard to get a passable fake ID anyway, but what bouncer is not completely on the look out for this kind of stuff? This is the reason Maggie’s is now closed at Syracuse, and why Konrad’s no longer exists. Bars get in trouble when they let underage kids in, so they specifically do everything they can to stop that. Just a dumb move from a student at an institution of higher learning. Then he gets a sweetheart deal, and puts it off? Not smart my friend. And kudos to the judge for putting his foot down. You do the crime, you should do the time, in this case in a program that will allow your record to be sealed. I’m sure he’ll have it done soon.
Booze, booze, booze. That’s all the crime we’ve had to report this season. Hopefully UConn will step up their game with some assaults and marijuana possessions soon.

This time Seton Hall gets on the board. The Yahoo! News via the Associated Press is reporting that Seton Hall Junior Transfer Keon Lawrence was arrested for driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. He was caught after an accident from driving on the wrong side of the Garden State Parkway. Both he and the driver of the other car were treated for minor injuries. He admitted to The Record of Bergen County that he was involved in an accident but he denies that he was charged with DWI.
Mr. Lawrence is awfully lucky he didn’t kill anybody if this story is in fact true. Either way, it states that Seton Hall is still “gathering information” about the incident. If this turns out to be the case though, hopefully the Hall will do the right thing and suspend him for the immediate future, as this is a serious incident that ended with minor injuries, but could have been much worse. We’ll keep you posted if any further information comes out.

Then #1 Connecticut traveled to Manley Field House to take on the then Syracuse Orangewomen basketball team. Well of course Syracuse was drubbed. Back then the team was atrocious save for Julie McBride. Meanwhile Connecticut had Sue Bird, who was as talented as she was lovely, and then Diana Taurasi. Seeing as Sue Bird was the senior leader on the team and the focus of most defensive efforts, she was also the focus of much heckling from my Sour Sitrus Society colleagues. If you are a loyal reader of the blog, you know what I mean by heckling. Now you have to understand, back then the team was horrible, we were playing #1 UConn, and we were getting trounced. We ended up losing this game by 30 points. There was not much to do at the women’s basketball games of this era other than heckle. With everyone else messing with Sue Bird, I focused my attention to the far lesser known Taurasi. I’m jawing at her the entire game, possibly calling her fat in some way, or maybe saying she looks like a dude. This was seven years ago after all. I definitely remember yelling at her, when it was quite as she shot a free throw, saying that I’d love to make up for the heckling by buying her Pita Pit. So we all have a grand old time, and we lose by 30. The buzzer goes and UConn is running back to the locker rooms, and just as I’m about to start playing the fight song, Diana looks right at me and gives me the middle finger across the court. I just stood there with my jaw dropped. And thus my real hatred of Connecticut women’s basketball was born. UConn went on to win the National Championship that year, by the by.
Thus the real news from this past weekend. So as I see Diana Taurasi on the bottom line I see it followed by “cited for D.U.I.”, and I immediately get excited. ESPN.com has the full low down. Basically she was speeding on July 3rd, got pulled over, the police smelled alcohol, transported her to a mobile D.U.I. center, then she gave blood and was issued a citation. Now, as a future lawyer, and at this point almost certain defense attorney, I don’t relish in people getting jacked up by police after having a few cocktails. But D.U.I. is a serious crime and if she had a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher, she will surely face a fine but probably not jail. Either way, as probably the biggest WNBA star right now, as well as the leading vote getter for the WNBA All Star Game, she should have known better. Looks like the curse of UConn and the Connvicts caught up to her finally. I, of course, will keep you posted to any further legal developments in this case.
Finally, I wonder where SU Athletics got this idea?

Andre Dixon, the junior tailback, was arrested by UConn Police on N. Eagleville Road after Dixon failed a series of field sobriety tests. He was stopped because he was following too closely to an officer’s vehicle. He was then placed under arrest and is now out on a $500 cash bail and is scheduled to be back in Rockville Superior Court on December 15th. Meanwhile, UConn Football Coach Randy Edsall has suspended him for the rest of the season.
This is not Dixon’s brush with rules. Dixon was suspended for the first two games of the 2007 football season for unspecified violations of team rules. Either way, this guy is talking like he blew his second chance opportunity. This very well may be the end of Dixon’s career at UConn as a football player. What a shame. DWI is one of the most avoidable crimes there are. It’s simple, you can either drink or drive your car, but not both. You can walk, get a cab, or get a buddy to take you. This was just a stupid mistake by a young man who should have known better. UConnvicts strike again!

ND Football Player Suspended, Liquor Stores Weep
0 Comments Published on 10.16.2008 by Brian HarrisonESPN.com reports that he has been suspended. This young man, you may remember, was snatched up in a big house party after a Notre Dame loss on the road. While the charges have been dropped from that arrest, Yeaman still blew a .02 BAC. Keep in mind, the legal limit for driving while intoxicated (DWI, DUI in New York, OUI in Massachusetts, all the same crime) is usually .08 BAC for a frame of reference. Normally, being underage with any alcohol in your system is a crime, however he was never charged with this. He still may be in trouble however, because he was on terms and conditions of no alcohol from a previous arrest in which he did plead guilty to driving while intoxicated and reckless driving when he drove his car across the South Bend campus.
This is my favorite part of the latest article. His father said the following:
Will had a .02 [blood-alcohol content at the party]. The other charges were dropped. There's never been a police report filed. And Will is an exceptionally good kid, admired by everybody, gets along with everybody. He's being suspended for a .02 BAC. After all he's been through, it appears to be a disproportionate penalty for college student.
Well that may be sir. Any student that simply had a .02 probably would not be suspended for the season from the football team. However, most of those people do not have a criminal record and are on terms and conditions saying the will not drink anything period. This is not the case for your son. Will Yeaman now faces up to 180 days in jail for having alcohol in his system in direct violation of his guilty plea in the previous case. Bravo!

First up, we have some booze news out of the University of Notre Dame. ESPN.com reports that several students were arrested this past weekend. I thought Catholics loved to drink? Anyway, among them were two members of the Notre Dame Football Team. 20 year old Right End Will Yeatman, and 18 year old Mike Golic, Jr., have been charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, and Yeatman will face the additional charges of false informing and resisting arrest. The arrests came subsequent to an investigation targeting businesses selling to underage kids. Yeatman could be facing even more charges as previously he was charged with driving drunk on a campus sidewalk, and the charges were dismissed last February if he managed to stay out of trouble for a year. Obviously he has not. Golic, it should be noted, is the son of ESPN television and radio host Mike Golic of “Mike & Mike In The Morning”. Additionally, several unnamed players from the men’s lacrosse team at the university are also in trouble for similar offenses. The District Attorney is determining on how to proceed.
Second, out of New Jersey we have an incident from the Rutgers Football Team. ESPN.com reports that Quarterback Mike Teal, in the waning seconds of the Rutgers loss to Navy, threw a punch at fellow Scarlet Knight Glen Lee. No action will be taken against Teal, he has apologized, and Coach Greg Schiano calls the incident “over and done with”. I guess these kind of things happen when you go from being atop the Big East to being worse than Syracuse. At least things are correct in that regard. Now if only UConn would have an epic collapse and Syracuse would win some games, all would be right with the world.
While clearly the second incident has no legal ramifications really, it is still worth note. At least Syracuse players are not punching each other on the sideline. As for the drinking, clearly this happens all the time in college so I do not really fault Golic too much, especially when he has not played a game for ND yet. Yeatman, however, is not exactly new to the criminal justice system and seems to have an alcohol problem. After getting a huge break on his last legal incident he then does this. Sorry, that is unacceptable. Hopefully all these crazy kids will learn from their mistakes. Stay tuned to Orange::44 for all the legal analysis of rival players in trouble you can stand.

With Leather, via The Daily Collegian, are reporting that the young man went on quite the spree after he no doubt ingested an extreme amount of alcohol in celebration of his 21 years on this green earth. Costenbader allegedly broke into the football building and caused $5,000 worth of damage before being found as stated above. The young man was charged with burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and public drunkenness. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bail, which I can say is an OUTRAGEOUS bail amount for only $5,000 worth of damage. The judges in PA are real hard asses apparently. The real question is where the hell were his friends that no doubt fed him shots all evening? What a bunch of a-holes. Who would pump a dude full of alcohol, surely see him visibly intoxicated, then just leave him to his own devices? Bad move brah. The kids at Penn State clearly do not know how to run a 21st.
All in all I have to say this is pretty awesome. I mean, if I were going to break into an athletic building I too would go right for the bowl trophy, or in our case, probably a National Championship trophy from lax. Either way, breaking into any building is wrong, especially while so intoxicated you do not even know what you are doing. Also, friends do not let friends go to State. And again, where was this kid’s friends? I know this stuff would not fly at the ‘Cuse. We take care of our friends. You know, unless you bought me that Three Wise Men on my 21st. Then you are on your own “pal”.

DO write a hilarious sign and bring it while you sit in the student section.
DO NOT wave that sign in a players face as they walk across the quad. They still hit harder than you.
DO quietly curse them under your breath.
DO NOT curse them in front of co-workers that love to razz you about every little thing you do (sorry Jimmy, you decorate your cube with SU stuff and its asking your Boston College friends to mess with you. It is good you still support the team even though we suck however.).
DO ask “when is lax season starting?” We won nine championships you know.
DO NOT put that shit in your profile. What kind of fareweather fan are you? Do you not bleed orange? Et tu, Brute?
DO wear a brown bag over your head.
DO NOT only wear a brown bag over your head.
DO be upset with the effort you see before you in the Dome.
DO NOT give up rooting until the fourth quarter.
DO rock the hat of a different football team that you have always rooted for since childhood. Notice how i specified that you need to have grown up watching the team before you picked Syracuse as your college of choice.
DO NOT rock the hat of anyone we play, anyone in the Big East, or anyone on the north east (see you in Hell, Rutgers!). This especially applies if you grew up in the north east. You picked Syracuse. Accept it and move on, you are rooting for us now.
DO feel free to consume enough alcohol to make yourself feel a little better.
DO NOT drink so much that you vomit anywhere near, in, or around the Carrier Dome. You do not want to take a nap in the metal urinal in the men’s room.
DO question coaching decisions, especially vocally and discuss them with other knowledgeable football fans.
DO NOT scream “Greg Robinson is the devil. I fucking hate you. Oh my God I want to drink bleach and keel over from a massive seizure. For the love of God just make the hurting stop. I welcome the sweet release of death from this terrible, terrible football team and the misery it brings.”
DO know what personnel Greg Robinson is utilizing and, depending on the situation, question the decision.
DO NOT insist you could play better unless you are kidding. Face it, if you suited up and went out there, your ACL would last about two plays. Give up the dream buddy. High school was years ago.
DO demand an entertaining game, where at least Syracuse keeps it close even if we lose.
DO NOT overly criticize the kids. They are in college and are not professional athletes. They are paid, but only through free school. You can approach the line and step on it, but it is just classless to step over it.
DO ask “why have you forsaken us, good fortune?”
DO NOT bring a live chicken to sacrifice in the locker room to satisfy Jobu. He cannot help you hit a curve ball, he’s not going to be able to help the O Line block. Oh by the way bartender, he needs a refill.
DO always root for the Orange, and clap when they make a great play or do something well.
DO NOT flip the bird when the running back is stopped behind the line. There are kids nearby, ya dick.
DO have fun and enjoy a ballgame with your friends, even though the team is probably losing.
DO NOT, because we are losing, take a brick and hit your friend in the face. It hurts. A lot. Looking at you Jayme.
Well this is a good start. There are plenty more situations I should elaborate on, but you get the idea where the line is. The most important rule is this: real fans stay the game. No matter the weather, no matter the parking situation, if you pay for a ticket in the Dome, and are a real fan of the team, you stay the game. If you are a really good alumni, you will even stay and sing the alma mater because, first you actually know it, and second your school means that much to you. So have fun, try not to be too bitter, shotgun a beer, and remember to stay classy Syracuse!
Looking back on your college experience at Syracuse, or even if you are just a fan of Syracuse sports, if you had to pick your top five best moments, at least a few of them would have taken place in the Carrier Dome. Other than possibly the Hall of Languages, it is the most recognizable building on campus. People pass it on the way to class, or back home to Saddler Hall. Folks drive by on I-81 and see it in all its splendor. Everyone can see it on ESPN several times a year. But what really makes this building so great? To add to the glorious football countdown, as well as take a break from the crazy Big Ten talk, below are my top five reasons why the Carrier Dome is so damn spectacular.
5. Beer
I put this at number five because it is so trivial. No one needs beer (alcoholic jokes aside). Beer really is not the be all end all for me, or most of my friends for that matter. However, when you are an adult, sometimes a beer is just what you want when watching an athletic competition of the highest magnitude. So therefore I appreciate the fact that even though the stadium is on campus I can still get a cold one, unlike most of the college facilities that are on a campus. If you ask me $4.50 is a bit much, but at least it is not the $7.00 they charge in East Hartford. And really, it is delicious. After all, I did say Syracuse basketball is best enjoyed with a cold beer and a bitter heart.
Editor’s Note: Beer is just dandy but liquor is quicker. My personal favorite is just bringing in a flask of delicious boozy booze and adding it to the old 44 ounce Pepsi, or my personal favorite Dr. Pepper (he did not go to school eight years for you to call him Mr. Pepper).
4. Versatile
What other college arena hosts football, basketball, lacrosse, and field hockey, as well as a multitude of other events like concerts, high school championships, and even marching band rehearsal? Dare I say none. Well there are probably others, but we were there first. Approaching the 27th year of Carrier Dome operation, they have hosted concerts ranging from U2, Billy Joel, and the Rolling Stones, to Wyclef, George Clinton and P Funk, and Kanye West.
3. On Campus
The Carrier Dome is still the largest on campus domed facility in the nation. Looking back on it, we were really spoiled. Being able to get up and roll to the Carrier Dome on a Saturday morning or afternoon drunk, hungover, or otherwise occupied was a luxury most college sports fans do not enjoy. Take Pittsburgh or UConn for example. Both schools used to play their games on campus. When the Steelers started playing in Hines Field the Panthers joined in, having to bus their kids from up on the hill in Oakland all the way downtown. The University of Connecticut Huskies similarly used to play at Alumni Stadium on campus behind Gample Pavilion. Now, with the advent of Rentschler Field (“The Rent”), the kids have to be bussed or drive the 30 plus minutes down I-84 to get there. Granted they have a good deal with tailgating, but I would much rather take my leisurely stroll from Ackerman Ave., head to the quad, enjoy some pre-game festivities, take a short walk to the Dome, enjoy the game, and take a stroll back home. Ah, those were the days my friends.
2. Dome
Being that Syracuse is the snowiest city in America, I greatly appreciate this one. Just down the road in Hamilton, New York, sits the educational institution of Colgate University. The Raiders are only a 1-AA school, but they still garner a lot of football fans. They sit in the bleachers and endure massive cold and ice, much like we do. While they are freezing their asses off however, we are toasty warm in a 79 degree dome. Now I am not saying that I would not be able to handle the cold and snow, I just appreciate the fact that I do not have to. Added bonus: no rain! Some football purists will say that a dome ruins football. I say those people have never had to be at a game in Upstate New York in late November. Oh sure, there are some days that were perfect football weather in September and I would have loved to tear the roof off and enjoy the sun with some football, but really those days were few and far between. So appreciate the fact you can enjoy a game, rain or shine, snow or sleet, and not have your ass freeze or get soaked.
1. Nothing Else Like It
Some call it “The Dome”, others call it the “Do Me”. I called it my second home during my college career. I saw it go from having Astroturf to FieldTurf (and subsequently was the first person outside of Dome staff to walk on it. Also, I wanted to go Boise St. style orange turf, but upon review it is perfect the way it is). I have seen an undefeated home basketball season, the only advanced Dome sellout of a basketball game, College Gameday twice, a few records get broken, and many overtime wins. From court rushes, to field rushes, every moment was great. There are plenty of college stadiums in this fine nation of ours, but no stadium offers what the Carrier Dome does. I have always said, especially in regards to football, that in the Dome, on any given day, Syracuse can play like the number one team in the nation, or play like the worst. I think we have all seen both. What is so great about the Carrier Dome is that any given day when you walk in, you have the chance of seeing the best game ever. When you are in the Dome, you can feel the sense of greatness and the ghosts of great players that have come and gone, leaving their mark. Although attendance is down the last few seasons (with good reason) there are still plenty of fans who pack the dome every game believing that something magical could happen. Something like this. Also, jumping out of an air lock is by far the best thing ever.
Some A/C would be a nice addition though.
So there you have it, the top five reasons why the Dome is so great. Do I wish that the dome was like THE Ohio State or Penn State with 100,000 plus people? Sometimes. But I would never trade the moments I have had with my friends in the Carrier Dome for all the gold in your Ft. Knox. Enjoy the continuing countdown to the upcoming season and all the Big Ten conjecturing you can handle.

It seems that Bucs fans can enjoy a cocktail next season. Tampabay.com is reporting that the city has preliminarily agreed to let the stadium purchase booze to sell during games. Someone tell DR. Gross to get on this. I think we all know Buzz Shaw would highly approve of this occurring in the Carrier Dome. Sadly, it will probably be expensive as sin. Just imagine how good you would feel, even after a loss to Rutgers!

Now that that is out of the way, time to pour some general anger and hatred towards people and things into this entry.
First on the list is Doug Gottlieb (who looks high, or like a douche bag, or both in his picture on ESPN.com). It does not matter who you are, or what you do, but you do not get into a fight with Jim Boeheim. It’s not as bad as getting into a fight with John Chaney, but you still don’t want to mess with the man (Good examples of both are here). Boeheim may have taken a cheap shot at Gottlieb, but he sort of earned it from the years of saying Syracuse is worse then they really are. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you should go here.
UConn is terrible this year. I have said it all year. I will continue to say it all year. As my friend at UConn put it, “why would I want to go and watch a bunch of freshmen that suck?” I could not have said it better myself. Pittsburgh dismantled this untested, undetermined squad. AJ Price has turned out to not be the savior of the season as some media types expected (just because his jersey said Connecticut on it). After two years off due to injury and legal issues, he is rusty and unproven. Also, to the coaches that vote in the poll…can we stop ranking UConn in the top ten every non-conference season for beating Quinnipiac, Fairfield, Sacred Heart, and Hartford? That would be great.
Notre Dame is a complete conundrum to me. By all conventional logic they should be terrible this year like they were last year. I’m glad they are playing Syracuse in the Dome and not at the Joyce.
ESPN is having Spirit Week and they asked their panel of experts to give their favorite atmospheres for watching college hoops. The Loud House got a little love from Mark Schlabach:
Syracuse: The noise at the Carrier Dome can be defeaning. I nearly deflated it during an NCAA Tournament regional by walking out the wrong door; the suction nearly blew me to nearby Albany, N.Y. At least they don't play basketball games in July; for whatever reason, the Carrier Dome doesn't have air conditioning.
While I agree it is one of the most intimidating places to play because of the noise of all the people, the air conditioning joke is a bit tired. Also, he misspelled deafening.
Nichols once again made it to the Big East Honor Roll. His name will appear in his local paper and he will get a coupon for one free ice cream in the cafeteria.
SU Athletics has now taken down the “Orange Ask A Question” for Darryl Gross off the front page. I wonder if he got pissed over this? Also, Josh Wrignt answers trivial questions. Shouldn’t you be in practice?
Now for the real fun: The Jim Boeheim Press Conference Drinking Game!
Rules: Grab a drink and watch the post game press conference of the head coach. Drink accordingly.
Note: This game best works if watching the press conference on News 10 Now or Syracuse.com.
Drink 1 if:
Jim scratches his head.
A current player is mentioned.
He disagrees with a reporter.
He doesn’t like a question.
Says the word “zone”.
Comments on The Big East or another Big East team.
Drink 2 if:
He states his man-to-man defense was good that night.
He argues with a reporter.
He mentions a former player.
He mentions Bernie Fine.
He mentions the fans or crowd noise.
He describes anything as “pretty good”.
He mentions officiating calls.
He defends his non-conference schedule.
Finish your drink if:
Tim Higgins or Jim Burr is mentioned.
He looks happy.
He swears.
