This is what a rivalry looks like Pat.While my official preview will come out later today, we need to get you adequately prepared for tonight's affair. Coming off a weekend perhaps this game has lost a little prospective. THIS is Georgetown v. Syracuse. It is one of the two most important games on the schedule. The coaches of each team, John Thompson III and Jim Boeheim agree. In an Orange::44 exclusive, using my vast network of informants I have come into possession of some black and white security footage from a parking garage in Syracuse. Don't even ask me how I came to possess this tape. While this would normally be forgettable in every way, this video contains the two coaches I have mentioned earlier. The contents are shocking. The two coaches met only hours ago, and despite the disguises used, you can clearly tell who this video is. I apologise for the grainy images. Parental discretion is advised.
Riveting stuff people. At least it's not a bull's ass, right?Syracuse enters Big East play for the 2009 football season this week, and on Homecoming no less. And it is a tall order as well. Syracuse will be playing the South Florida Bulls. A team that just beat a ranked Florida State team in Tallahassee. A tall feat. Syracuse meanwhile comes off of a half assed win against 1-AA Maine. Reality has set back in that Syracuse will have to play a great ballgame this weekend to win.
Syracuse enters the game averaging 26.3ppg, putting them at 64th in the NCAA. USF averages 37.8ppg, putting them in 21st. On top of that USF has allowed 27 points, whereas Syracuse has allowed 109, which is more than they have earned. As a matter of fact, Syracuse has allowed more points than they have scored overall. However, Syracuse will not be facing Orange killer Matt Grothe, but rather BJ Daniels. While he had a spectacular performance last weekend, specifically rushing 23 times for 146 yards, it is highly suspect that he will have the same performance this week. This defense has clearly watched the film, and will be ready to stop the run by any means necessary. Daniels threw two interceptions last week, so Syracuse could wind up winning the turnover battle, and earning points off of them. Of course, Syracuse will face the best defense they have seen so far, specifically with DE George Selvie. He is one of the best defensive players in the league, so SU will have their hands full. If Syracuse can create turnovers, and keep scoring (especially converting third downs against this tough defense), Syracuse will force USF to respond. Syracuse needs to play a perfect and balanced game though. If Syracuse establishes the run, which they really have not been able to these past games, the Syracuse has a real chance to shock the league. If not, it will be another day for the Bulls in the Carrier Dome. I just don’t see Syracuse being able to convert most of their third downs and playing a perfect game, so I sadly have to give it to the Bulls on Homecoming. I’d love to #BeatUSF, but I have to call USF over Syracuse in a fairly close game 30 to 24.

We are serious about lacrosse... and tailgating.It was only two weeks ago Syracuse won a record 11th National Championship. Some would say tenth, but even the NCAA is selling shirts that say 11 so we’re going with that. As promised I would have the mega awesome recap. Uniquely however, rather than boiling down the Final Four in my usual prose and text written in this space here (you can read my Final Four and Championship recaps), I bring it to you in living video and in pictures. We start with the recap from the people that brought you the games; ESPN. From SU Alumnus Dave Ryan and Quint Kessenich, they called another Final Four in the booth together and bring you the official recap.
Next, we hit the Youtubes to see some compiled game footage, as the miracle actually happened.
Then the fine folks at Inside Lacrosse got a camera in the hands of injured player Spencer Van Shaak to give you a behind the scenes look at the team.

Another career day for another great Orange player.“Today was by far our best performance all season.” Senior Kenny Nims sums it up perfectly. Syracuse came into Foxborough looking pretty even on paper with the Duke Blue Devils, the only program not to have a National Championship. They were sent home empty handed as the #2 Syracuse Orange beat the Dukies 17 to seven.
The game started with Syracuse getting first crack at Duke, with Chris Daniello putting SU on the board with 13:08 in the first quarter. Long stick Joel White then added another with 7:13 remaining in the first half. Duke then got on the board with a pair of their own from Zach Howell to tie the game 2-2. Then with 35 seconds remaining in the first quarter star of the day Pat Perritt hit his first goal to give SU back the lead. Then with one second remaining in the quarter Kenny Nims earned his first goal of the day as well on an excellent isolation and split dodge. Duke wasted no time trying to come back earning a goal only 11 seconds in the second quarter. Syracuse then added four goals in the second quarter with Duke only adding one more to leave Syracuse up 8-4 at the half. Then Jake Moulton, our face off specialist, took exactly seven seconds to start the second half to score. Syracuse then proceeded to outscore Duke 6-2 in the third quarter. By then it was basically over. Duke added one more before Syracuse finished the game with a stretch of three goals to finish the game. Syracuse was in control this game and clearly had the best offense on the field.
Kenny Nims had four goals on the day, but so did fellow senior Pat Perritt who had a career day. Seven other players also had goals, including Cody Jamieson and Tim Desko who each had two. Dan Hardy led the team with assists with two. He also added a goal. Jake Moulton led the team in ground balls with six. He was also the man at the face off X, winning ten of 17. Gavin Jenkinson also won seven of nine face offs. They were helped by several Duke procedure calls to give Syracuse the win at the X. John Galloway played well in his 57:17 in the game. He had 11 saves and only allowed seven goals. Backup Al Cavalieri came in but did not make any saves.
Syracuse once again led the shot category. SU had 48 shots while Duke had 32. ‘Cuse led in ground balls picking up 36, with Duke picking up 33. Syracuse won a total of 18 of 28 face offs, winning eight more than Duke. Duke was perfect on clears, converting 19 of 19, while Syracuse converted 22 of 25. Duke did manage to, after clearing, try to pass and miss it, allowing it to roll out of bounds. Syracuse converted 2-4 on extra man opportunities, and Duke converted 1-5. Each team had 11 saves.
While Pat Perritt was the offensive MVP, Sid Smith was clearly the MVP for the defense. He limited Duke’s Ned Crotty to just two assists. He was pressuring and swarming when he needed to be and really limited the Duke stars in this game. I still cannot say enough about Nims and Perritt in this game. They were masterful and their offensive awareness was key in this game. Galloway also did what Galloway has become known for; playing clutch in NCAA games. He started early and often making big stops on the Duke shooters, and was rewarded with having this game in hand in the third quarter. Syracuse played a great game on every side of the ball and I agree with Nims, this was Syracuse’s best complete performance on the season. The complete box score is here.

It was a fine day in Amherst for the Orange.Syracuse has had a fine year with a few downs, but mostly ups. Heading into Saturday’s game versus #15 Massachusetts, #2 Syracuse had a record of ten wins and two losses. Syracuse has also lost the last two times they have traveled to Massachusetts, most recently preventing Syracuse from reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2007. That was no the fate of the Orange this time, as Syracuse wins big in Amherst ten to three.
The game started off back and forth, with Massachusetts scoring the first goal. It was a defensive battle the entire first half, as no team managed to score in the last thirteen and a half minutes in the second quarter. However after the start of the second half, Syracuse scored four unanswered, making it eight to two. UMass added their third and final goal with less than two minutes left in the third. Then Syracuse finished by adding two more in the fourth to win ten to three. Transfer Cody Jamieson almost added one more, but it was waived off for a crease violation. Either way, this was a strong effort on both sides of the ball. Syracuse’s defense led by Sid Smith was stifling on most occasions, and was tough on the UMass shooters. Syracuse’s offense also found much success on the net, as the shooters continued to paint the corners and hit far and contested shots.
Stephen Keogh led the Orange with three goals, two of which came in the forth quarter to earn him his 40th goal of the year. The goal at the 6:44 minute mark is in the video below, in which he gets a pass right in front of the crease and puts it through his legs and in the goal. Kenny Nims led in assists with three, and he also contributed a goal. Josh Amidon also added two goals of his own. Sid Smith set a career high for himself in picking up six ground balls. Four Orange players took a face off in this game. Jake Moulton won four of nine, Tim Harder won two of three, Gavin Jenkinson won two of four, and Josh Knight lost his one face off. John Galloway looked much sharper in this game. He did let one very soft goal go by in the second UMass score, but his third was just a good goal as Galloway made the initial stop but the deflection ended up right in the net of a UMass player and he put it right in. That one couldn’t be helped. He finished the day with 14 saves and only three goals against in sixty minutes of play. A significant improvement over his last few games.
Syracuse, as expected, led in the shot category. Syracuse took 37, while Massachusetts took 30. The Orange picked up 31 ground balls and the Minutemen only grabbed 19. This could be due to luck, but it was mostly due to the solid wing play of Syracuse. Massachusetts led the Orange in face off wins, taking nine of 17. Syracuse cleared 19 of 25 balls, while Massachusetts cleared 18 of 20. Neither Syracuse nor Massachusetts capitalized on two extra man opportunities. Finally, Galloway again made 14 saves, while Massachusetts goalie Doc Schneider saved 17 and allowed 10. The complete box score can be found here.

Before this game Syracuse had lost the last two games in Amherst, but they won big on Saturday. At the time Syracuse and UMass were ranked #2/3 and #15/16 respectively. Now Syracuse ascends to #1 in both polls, earning 15 of 20 first place votes in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and four of eight in the coaches poll. UMass is tied for 15th in the media poll and #15 in the coach’s poll. The media poll can be found here, and the coach’s poll can be found here.
Syracuse earns the top spot because of some interesting action over the weekend. Other notable scores were:

This game has relatively low implications, but with a victory Syracuse should seal up a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A loss will surely still allow Syracuse to go to the NCAA Tournament, but they will not have as good of a seed. At they very least they have locked up a top 4 seed though. If Syracuse continues to play well like they did in Amherst, they should easily reach the Final Four once again. I would rather watch 20 football games coached by Greggers than this crap.As you loyal readers know I currently live in Springfield, Massachusetts. In case you aren’t familiar with the area my apartment is about five minutes from the State of Connecticut. Thus I am sadly subject to the marketing machine that is the University of Connecticut. Thus this was on television during one of my DVR’ed programs.

Sometimes you have to hand off a little responsibility to Nunes.It is another Friday, which means that there is not much going on in terms of Syracuse or breaking news in the Big East, save for the occasional law breaker. Therefore we have a special Friday treat for you. Over at Troy Nunes is An Absolute Magician is the latest edition of Orange::44 Is An Absolute Magician. I know it is not a Tuesday, but we figured we would save it for when we were not all still hung up on the Georgetown win or the Louisville loss.
Also, if you are craving some more videos related to Syracuse, the new website Reel Sports Fan, a website with all user uploaded content started by a Syracuse alumnus, has a lot of ‘Cuse related videos, including some from the folks at Citrus TV on campus. Included this week is a preview of the Notre Dame basketball contest on Sunday at 2:00pm on CBS. Check out the Syracuse video page here and enjoy a solid weekend of ‘Cuse sports. If lacrosse is your thing #8 Syracuse will host Army at 3:30pm in the Carrier Dome on Sunday as well. Plenty of Syracuse sports to mull over this weekend so enjoy.
