There Used To Be Clocks Here

Indiana University of Pennsylvania Quick Thoughts

Kristof! steal ball and then shoot!
Mush like last Monday’s exhibition game, I gave you some “Quick Hits” as far as what I thought the storylines for the game were, and some interesting tidbits for you to chew on in preparation for the season. Seeing as Brent Axe, the Axeman, was home watching the Bills game on Sunday, I guess my coverage will have to do for you until the real games start.

* Most impressive performance has to go to Kristof! “The Belgian Waffle” Ongenaet, who had a marginal five points and six rebounds. What was key for Kristof! was three steals that he took coast to coast on two of them. That is the hard nosed, always trying player that Syracuse fans love.

* Eric Devendorf was your leading scorer with 15 points. Both he and Jonny Flynn played 30 minutes and Flynn punched in 14 points. Devo looked good slicing through the lane, putting the high lefty kiss off the glass and in. Absolutely no problems with his knee.

* Who did not even dress for the game was Andy Rautins, who rolled his ankle in practice the other day. He should be good to go by Sunday.

* Onuaku had only seven points, but he did tear it up on the boards, getting two offensive rebounds and 11 defensive rebounds in 29 minutes.

* Kris Joseph had an absolutely electrifying block in the second half. He is going to be a much needed spark off the bench for Syracuse this season. He also had 14 points.

* Paul Harris had a nice game of 12 points, going six for ten in 23 minutes, also earning three assists. He however went 0-3 from long range.

* Your starting lineup was Jonny Flynn, Eric Devendorf, Paul Harris, Rick Jackson, and Arinze Onuaku.

* Rick Jackson did not do as well this game as the last, only earning nine total rebounds and four points. He couldn’t put the ball in the ocean if he was on a boat at some points. When you are that tall and only three feet from the rim, it should go in every time unless you get blocked or fouled.

* Syracuse played almost exclusive man-to-man defense, and frankly it was not very good. For all the players talk about how they like playing man, they could have been better at it. Either way, it will be good to add to the arsenal of defense and it will be better by the time the Big East rolls around. Either way, I wish they played more zone in the exhibition games to see how these new kids take to it.

* Syracuse shot 49% from the floor and 40% from long range. Those are right about where they should be, however they should get better as the season progresses. Regardless, the free throws are a critical issue that will haunt Syracuse if they do not commit to getting better at making them.

* The announced attendance at this game was 8,655. That looked about right. The Dome was the quietest I’ve heard in a while, and hardly any students, save Jameson and his posse, were at the game. It was a pitiful showing from the students. I may have rather watched the Bills too.

* At one point during the game the PA Announcer Mike Veley said “Two points for Jonny Be Good”, to which my friend John Brennan replied “Go fuck yourself, Mike.” You can’t make this kind of comedy up people. Mike Veley is terrible, and when they force nicknames on fans it takes poor marketing to a whole new level.

* As I discussed with Sean at Nunes/Magician, these are glorified practices, so do not take too much stock in the point spread of this game. It will be interesting to see how Sunday goes for Syracuse versus Le Moyne, as it is a D2 opponent, but it is for real this time.

So there you have it. The full box score can be found here. The season starts for real this Sunday night in the Dome at 6:30pm on ESPN U in the CBE Classic. Stay tuned here for continuing coverage of this and every Syracuse game. I will again be at the UConn football game, so expect something Sunday on that, but sadly I will not be at this game as I am giving a lecture to some young legal scholars, but I will give you my reactions as always. We also have Orange::44 correspondent John Brennan at the game to provide some coverage. Either way, you are covered here at Orange::44.

"Jonny Be Good? Go fuck yourself, Mike!" Man, it's horrible. I miss Carl.

Also nice to know you've enlisted me for the LeMoyne recap. I'll do what I can. Maybe even a nice pic to go along with it, we'll see.
