Interesting crime news out of Binghamton, New York. Although this traditional Upstate rival of Syracuse is not on the schedule this season, we have played them in the past and the story is too good to let slip by.
Syracuse.com is reporting that a member of the Binghamton basketball team has been suspended because police say he stole a box of condoms from a nearby Wal*Mart in Vestal, New York. 20 year old Junior Malik Alvin from Philadelphia (where it is Always Sunny) allegedly attempted to leave the store with a big box of 36 condoms when he was confronted by store security. As he tried to run from the store, he knocked down a 66-year-old woman, who reportedly suffered a concussion. Alvin is currently charged with assault and shoplifting, but they really mean petit larceny, which in New York is taking any property with a value of $1,000 or less. He is free pending further court action. Alvin transferred from UTEP, where he previously played college basketball.
Alright, it is one thing to take come condoms and get your bisnassss on, but to try to run after getting caught and then knocking down a poor old woman is inexcusable. At that point when you are caught, you take the charge, try to pay restitution, do some community service or even get an ACD (adjournment in contemplation of dismissal) in which if you stay out of trouble for six months the charges are dismissed, but you do not run. Either way, this is a bad situation for a young man and an elderly lady. The legal system will sort out the details and the punishment if applicable, but the University has done the right thing by suspending him until the investigation is over. H/T JBren.
