There Used To Be Clocks Here

Despite the loss, it was an excellent tribute to Pearl.
Syracuse just couldn't do it. Despite hanging with or staying just ahead of Georgetown for most of the game, Syracuse slowly faded in the final ten minutes of the game. Syracuse didn't play well enough to win. Georgetown beat Syracuse on Pearl Washington Day, 78 to 71.
  • Hero of the Day was clearly Tyler Lydon. He had his best game of the year with 29 points on 12-13 shooting. He was a perfect 3-3 from 3. He also has 9 rebounds. He was brilliant on the day.
  • Despite finishing with 13 points, John Gillon was the biggest disappointment on the day for me. Most likely because he went 4-14. Four or five of those misses had to have been missed layups in transition, or that were blocked by a taller Georgetown player. Or just the fact Gillon can't seem to hit a reverse layup. It's fine that he can't. But know when to stay in your lane. Get the steal and if the layup isn't obvious or uncontested, maybe pull it out and have a chance at getting two points instead of an automatic turnover.
  • Frank Howard was also disappointing. He was 2-6, 0-2 shooting for four points. He also had six turnovers to four assists. Howard needs to facilitate more for Syracuse to be successful.
  • White was only 2-8 from 3. That also didn't help things.
  • Georgetown was 22-25 from the free throw line. I mentioned in my preview that Syracuse had to be smart about fouls because that is where Georgetown lives. They weren't. Syracuse, conversely, was 14-25.
  • The tribute to Pearl with his teammates and family was perfect and well done by the school. A vast contract from the ol' "Bowie" incident. New AD having a positive effect perhaps?
Enough about that. This was a miserable ending. Each basket was like pulling teeth. And in the end, Georgetown made baskets. Syracuse didn't. Now Syracuse will have to do some real work in the ACC to warrant Tournament consideration. Because they have really not done anything in the non-conference.

Just Happy To Be Here

Well we didn’t win The 2006 College Football Blogger Award, however I feel good for actually being nominated. It’s a cliché but I really mean it. And hey, second place isn't so bad. I joined the staff of this fine notebook out of boredom and love of the alma mater and I think I’ve gotten better at this blogging thing along the way. I hope that you’ve been informed and entertained (and by entertained I’m sure it was mostly from Matt).

It’s not easy to keep up with a full time job, or in my case a full time job and law school in the evenings, and update and produce quality articles in a timely fashion and to be recognized by our peers for this feat is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank Matt for letting me join this notebook, basically on blind faith. I appreciate the fact I wasn't told to take a hike.

Congratulations to Doug and the rest of the nominees for the good work and I look forward to another season of quality frustrated articles from the lot, although not having to be frustrated would be better.

One final thought. This Blogger Awards are great, but why is Notre Dame being considered with the Big East blogs for football. There are some fantastic Big East colleagues that deserve reorganization and a nomination for Best Big East Blog, but the Independent Notre Dame blogs took up three spots. Come on! See, now I'm even bitching at stuff that isn't Syracuse related. Sorry, it's just habit now.
Anyway, this blog has been fun to write for and I hope you get that when you read what Matt and I (and occasionally others) produce here at Orange::44. Thanks and thanks for reading.

It's an Honor Just to be Nominated

If losing is par for the course, Syracuse -- and anything mildly associated with the Orange -- is at least four-under.

The 2006 College Football Blogger Awards is now at its apex; nominations have concluded, the voting is complete, and the roster of winners is slowly, yet surely, making its way through the college football universe.

This notebook, appropriately, was nominated in a single category: The Job Award. Designed to honor faithfulness in the face abject failure, the award epitomizes the inherent purpose and valor of college athletics.

Fittingly, Orange:44 failed to take home the hardware. Doug Gillett, Georgia partisan and author of the canonical Hey Jenny Slater wrangled high honors in the category. The defeat is not surprising in and of itself -- I was torn between voting for Doug or Ian Cohen's Virginia FanHouse -- but the fact that enough people sympathized with this notebook's collegiate affiliation is heartening.

I think.

Anyway, a hearty "congratulations" to Doug. And to everyone who took time out of their day to cast a ballot for this notebook, "thank you."
